Then — shuts the Door —
To her divine Majority —
Present no more —

Unmoved — she notes the Chariots — pausing —
At her low Gate —
Unmoved — an Emperor be kneeling
Upon her Mat —

I’ve known her — from an ample nation —
Choose One —
Then — close the Valves of her attention —
Like Stone —

I Dwell In Possibility http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/i-dwell-in-possibility/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/i-dwell-in-possibility/#comments Sun, 09 Nov 2008 20:50:17 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/?p=265 I dwell in Possibility -
A fairer House than Prose -
More numerous of Windows -
Superior – for Doors -

Of Chambers as the Cedars -
Impregnable of Eye -
And for an Everlasting Roof
The Gambrels of the Sky -

Of Visitors – the fairest -
For Occupation – This -
The spreading wide my narrow Hands
To gather Paradise -

No Time To Hate http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/no-time-to-hate/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/no-time-to-hate/#comments Fri, 03 Oct 2008 20:59:12 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/?p=247 I had no time to hate, because
The grave would hinder me,
And life was not so ample I
Could finish enmity.

Nor had I time to love, but since
Some industry must be,
The little toil of love, I thought,
Was large enough for me.

I Taste A Liqour http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/i-taste-a-liqour/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/i-taste-a-liqour/#comments Mon, 15 Sep 2008 17:56:42 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/?p=234 I taste a liquor never brewed,
From tankards scooped in pearl;
Not all the vats upon the Rhine
Yield such an alcohol!

Inebriate of air am I,
And debauchee of dew,
Reeling, through endless summer days,
From inns of molten blue.

When landlords turn the drunken bee
Out of the foxglove’s door,
When butterflies renounce their drams,
I shall but drink the more!

Till seraphs swing their snowy hats,
And saints to windows run,
To see the little tippler
Leaning against the sun!

A Bird came down the Walk http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/a-bird-came-down-the-walk/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/a-bird-came-down-the-walk/#comments Fri, 15 Aug 2008 20:04:19 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/?p=200 A Bird came down the Walk—
He did not know I saw—
He bit an angle-worm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw,

And then he drank a Dew
From a convenient Grass,
And then hopped sidewise to the Wall
To let a Beetle pass—

He glanced with rapid eyes
That hurried all abroa—
They looked like frightened Beads, I thought—
He stirred his velvet head

Like one in danger, Cautious,
I offered him a Crumb,
And he unrolled his feathers
And rowed him softer home—

Than Oars divide the Ocean,
Too silver for a seam—
Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon,
Leap, splashless as they swim.

Bustle In A House http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/bustle-in-a-house/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/bustle-in-a-house/#comments Tue, 05 Aug 2008 19:47:43 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/?p=192 The bustle in a house
The morning after death
Is solemnest of industries
Enacted upon earth.

The sweeping up the heart
And putting love away
We shall not want to use again
Until eternity.

Hope is the Thing with Feathers http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/hope-is-the-thing-with-feathers/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/hope-is-the-thing-with-feathers/#comments Tue, 15 Jul 2008 20:21:22 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/?p=174 “Hope” is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea,
Yet never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

The Sun Kept Setting http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/the-sun-kept-setting/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/the-sun-kept-setting/#comments Fri, 13 Jun 2008 18:01:03 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/2008/06/13/the-sun-kept-setting/ THE SUN kept setting, setting still;
No hue of afternoon
Upon the village I perceived,—
From house to house ’t was noon.

The dusk kept dropping, dropping still;
No dew upon the grass,
But only on my forehead stopped,
And wandered in my face.

My feet kept drowsing, drowsing still,
My fingers were awake;
Yet why so little sound myself
Unto my seeming make?

How well I knew the light before!
I could not see it now.
’T is dying, I am doing; but
I ’m not afraid to know.

Behind Me Dips Eternity http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/behind-me-dips-eternity/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/behind-me-dips-eternity/#comments Thu, 29 May 2008 18:05:52 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/2008/05/29/behind-me-dips-eternity/ Behind Me — dips Eternity –
Before Me — Immortality –
Myself — the Term between –
Death but the Drift of Eastern Gray,
Dissolving into Dawn away,
Before the West begin –

‘Tis Kingdoms — afterward — they say –
In perfect — pauseless Monarchy –
Whose Prince — is Son of None –
Himself — His Dateless Dynasty –
Himself — Himself diversify –
In Duplicate divine –

‘Tis Miracle before Me — then –
‘Tis Miracle behind — between –
A Crescent in the Sea –
With Midnight to the North of Her –
And Midnight to the South of Her –
And Maelstrom — in the Sky –

I Cannot Live Without You http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/i-cannot-live-without-you/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/i-cannot-live-without-you/#comments Sat, 10 May 2008 20:31:31 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/2008/05/10/i-cannot-live-without-you/ I CANNOT live with you,
It would be life,
And life is over there
Behind the shelf

The sexton keeps the key to,
Putting up
Our life, his porcelain,
Like a cup

Discarded of the housewife,
Quaint or broken;
A newer Sevres pleases,
Old ones crack.

I could not die with you,
For one must wait
To shut the other’s gaze down, –
You could not.

And I, could I stand by
And see you freeze,
Without my right of frost,
Death’s privilege?

Nor could I rise with you,
Because your face
Would put out Jesus’,
That new grace

Glow plain and foreign
On my homesick eye,
Except that you, than he
Shone closer by.

They’d judge us — how?
For you served Heaven, you know,
Or sought to;
I could not,

Because you saturated sight,
And I had no more eyes
For sordid excellence
As Paradise.

And were you lost, I would be,
Though my name
Rang loudest
On the heavenly fame.

And were you saved,
And I condemned to be
Where you were not,
That self were hell to me.

So we must keep apart,
You there, I here,
With just the door ajar
That oceans are,
And prayer,

And that pale sustenance,
Despair!
